Weber-Stephen 1424001 22.5'' Performer Charcoal Grill Review

If you're thinking about taking the leap from gas back to charcoal but are concerned with the time and effort to fire it up, you should consider the Performer. With onboard charcoal storage (consider gloves for removing the charcoal from the storage bin) combined with the gas lighting feature, there is very little additional time from lifting the lid to searing your steaks. Throw in a few pre soaked hickory chips and it all comes back - that wonderful smokey aroma that only a charcoal grill can provide. With this design, even disposal of the ash is a breeze, the container at the bottom simply twists off, the ash can be dumped and you're back in business. I received this grill for my 60th birthday and have been very pleased.

Weber 2740001 Summit S-470 Grill, Propane, Stainless Steel Review

Weber 2740001 Summit S-470 Grill, Propane, Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started off looking at the TEC Infrared grills at around the $4k price range, after a while, I found I could get a similar grill from Fire Magic, for less money, so was about to go that route. I sent an e-mail to the people at Shopper's Choice, and asked some questions about Infrared grills in general. What I found out was very interesting, and kept me from buying the wrong grill.
It turns out, almost all infrared grills are only good for one thing, cooking steaks, and usually rare to medium rare in taste. I do not like my meat still mooing, so that was out of the question. About the only infrared grill that would allow you to cook other foods, and use other doneness levels, would be the TEC. This is because the TEC version can get down to around 300 degrees, where most other infrared grills have a low temp of only about 500-600 degrees. So, if you only like cooking steaks, then an infrared grill is for you. Otherwise, one of the Fire Magic grills would be a good choice, as you can get both infrared and conventional gas burners, but there is still one drawback to that, over this Weber model. That is, that if you need conventional burners for whatever you are cooking, the grill space over the infrared burner is wasted, and cannot be used for anything else.
After much looking around, and reading reviews of Weber grills (including the one already here on this grill), I decided I wanted one of the Summit grills. I decided on the 470 model, because 4 main burners was more than enough for what I wanted to do, and our family isn't huge, so the added space probably wouldn't get used. The reason I picked the higher end 4 burner model, was because I wanted the sear station, to get the effect of the infrared burner, without having to devote an entire burner to it. In my opinion, the lighted knobs are kind of a waste, however, I haven't needed to use them. The grill out light is kind of cool, and I've actually used it a few times now with good results.
I ordered this grill online (not through Amazon), and it arrived on a pallet, within a heavy cardboard box. Almost all of the main unit was already assembled, leaving the wings, and a few other things to install. I think it took me less than an hour to assemble the entire unit, once I got it off the pallet. This grill is heavy, around 300-350lbs, so it is a lot easier if you have a couple people to get it out of the packaging.
I was really impressed with the quality of the parts. All of the burners, flame tamers, and grates are made out of stainless steel, so they should last the life of the grill (which I expect to be 20 years or more). One of the more cool features of this grill, is the smoker box. This is something that did not even come with the higher-end grills, until you stepped up to the $6k or more grills. The smoker box is all stainless steel, and has its own burner on the very right side of the grill. It takes up little grilling space, which is nice. I've used it several times, and it seems to work pretty well. Controlling the amount of smoke is as easy as turning a knob.
On to the cooking. This grill is fantastic at cooking. You get those perfect sear marks on everything you cook, and the flavor is outstanding. One thing I would point out here, is if you think you really know how to grill, get the cook book by Jamie Purviance, called Weber's Real Grilling (bought here on Amazon for less than $17, 75 reviews at 5 stars), and you will really learn how to grill. It is amazing some of the things I used to do to try and make things taste better, only to learn it was the wrong thing to do. A lot of people I have seen grilling, do it the WRONG way, so I'd highly recommend this book, not only does it teach you the proper technique, it has some fantastic recipes in it (not just meat, either--my wife and I are fans of the Barbecue Chicken Pizzas--yes, on the grill pizza, and the Apple Cake).
The grill is fantastic at everything so far. I have not tried the rotisserie yet, but everything else works really well. The burner lighting system is great, basically like using a flame thrower to light the burner, so you don't have to sit there and keep sparking the igniter all the time (oh, and the igniter is nice, it's built-in to the knob, you don't push another button or anything, just turn the knob to light, and hold it for a second or two, and you're good to go. This grill is capable of getting very HOT. The first time I used it to make a couple steaks, with the sear burner on, I burned all the hair off of my right hand, just opening the grill cover! I did the same thing a few weeks later, until I learned my lesson--get longer grilling tools! The knobs regulate well, and the burners seem to cook evenly.
Overall, I'm really impressed with this grill. I would buy it again, without a second thought. It sure beats the Patio Caddy I had, up until I got this one. This grill does seem to go through the gas a little faster, but then again, it has more than one burner... I ordered the Weber grill cover that goes with this grill last week, because I noticed that even under a covered porch, the grill does get pretty dirty.

Fire up this grill with the push of a button, and load up its burly cooking grates with food for the whole crowd. With gourmet-savvy features for juicy flavor and tenderness, the Summit grill from Weber is the best way to take backyard grilling to the next level. The Summit features a sturdy, enclosed cart with chrome-plated cast aluminum handles. A steel frame and stainless steel shroud with polished handle and trim will shimmer brightly on the patio or deck. And, accent colored painted, cast aluminum end caps dress up the unit nicely.

The primary cooking area measures 468 square inches. The handy warming rack area measures 112 square inches for a total cooking area of 580 square inches. The grill also has a 12,000-Btu input flush-mount side burner that lets you prepare sauces and side dishes right on the grill. A 10,600-Btu infrared rotisserie burner is great for slow-cooking poultry, ham, and roast. And, a 10,600-Btu dedicated sear burner puts the perfect glaze on your favorite outdoor meal.

The surface is truly non-stick and that is impressive considering I use it on the grill. It is very nice to cook something like onions or shrimp on the grill and not have them fall thru the grates. The removable handle is great as I have a small grill and could not cover a pan with a handle. I highly recommend this.

Tec Infrared Cherokee Portable Grill Review

This would not be for the new TEC Cherokee aluminum pictured, my purchase was for the older 2002 model Cherokee CH-10SS stainless steel, I perfer this older model due to the fact that the fire actually touches the food, I believe the ratio is 60% infrared heat and 40% flame which is a great combination for flame seared foods, there is no glass on top of the ceramic burner. To me this tastes better, more like flame BBQ, it is ready to go in a couple of minutes, great heat control, it even came with the TEC matching stainless steel wheeled cart. These has been discontinued, so if you can even find one of these anymore, I would recommend buying it highly, I like this sooo much, I even purchased another one (brand spanking new) on Ebay for a spare, lucky me. Rome's #1100 Old Fashioned Waffle Iron, Cast Iron Review

Rome's #1100 Old Fashioned Waffle Iron, Cast Iron
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought 2 of these. Based on the potential product quality, I would give it 5 stars. These can make great waffles (nonbelgian - i.e. thin), crisp on the outside, tender in the center, and light and airy. It's a revelation in fact, if you are used to the typical doughy waffle. I like these much better the what the waring pro, nonstick, flip, automatic beep, etc. In addition, the cycle time can be quite fast, provided you preheat the irons sufficiently and keep a high enough temperature. I can average 1 waffle a minute.
However, I took off a star because of the following caveats:
1) You must know how to season cast iron, otherwise the waffles will stick. It would be great if they could preseason this, like lodge logic. To season, first i put the irons in boiling water to take off the wax coating, then soaped and washed. I decided to season this on the stove top (make sure you have a good hood & vent). I preheated the irons, then brushed a raw chunk of pork fat on the surfaces several times and continued heating until the seasoning looked hard and black and no longer sticky. It took about 30 minutes (using 4 burners as I had 4 halves or two whole wafflers) and it will give off a lot of smoke. I decided to do this on the stove top because i have more control vs the oven.
2) The handles get hot. So, you need a mitt to handle it. I find a thin mitt easier to use than a thick one. It's easier to lift just the top half with a thin mitt. And you have to be somewhat careful as the halves can disengage while you are filling and removing the waffles. Having said that, I got the hang of it pretty quickly. I would not let my kids use it though. They also sell these with wooden handles. It would probably be easier.
3) You have to use enough heat. You have to preheat each side till it starts to smoke. I use medium to medium high heat on a gas burner. Do not use high heat to preheat as you can burn off the seasoning. By the way, i don't know if this will work on an electric burner. And you have to brush or spray some oil or butter. I brush lightly a mix of oil and butter. I find i only have to do this every other waffle, as the waffle mix does have some butter in it.
4) I don't wash the waffle surfaces, I just brush and wipe after cooking.
HOWEVER, in spite of all that, I really like these and the my kids rate the waffles a 10, especially the cheesy waffles.
I use a yeasted waffle batter that I make the night before. It includes, flour, buttermilk, eggs, and a bit of sugar and salt and some melted butter. I stir in a pinch of baking soda for extra lift prior to baking. You can put vanilla extract or grated cheese. I top with either real maple syrup, dulce sauce, or whipped cream and chopped fruits.

Cuisinart Simply Grilling Nonstick Fish Filet Basket Review

Cuisinart Simply Grilling Nonstick Fish Filet Basket
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Excellent product, a little bit bigger than I expected, enough space to grill about 2-3 pieces of fish. Hand wash only- don't like that I cannot put it in the dishwasher. It doesn't lie flat on the grill so it takes about extra 1-2 minutes per side to cook the fish. Has an easy open tab, always wear oven mitts when using this product to turn or remove the fish from the basket.
For a 15-minute pre-heated 425 degree gas grill on medium flame:
For 8 oz. of thick salmon: 7 mins. per side...
For 8 oz. of swordfish- 4:15 per side.
Walleye 6 oz: 4:15 per side.
Perch or Bluegill 3 oz: 2:30 min. per side.
Half way thru each side of cooking- I switch positions for even cooking and no burning of the fish.
I am a fisherman-with 9 fish Ohio awards so I cook a tremendous amount of fish. Want to preserve your catch for over a year with no freezer burn on your fish?
Date the bag on the outside with a permanent marker before it gets wet. Rinse fish off and put them in a gallon size Ziploc or Hefty bag that is filled 3/4 of the way up with 3 shakes of salt in the water. Fish must be below the water line in the bag- you should be able to get about 10-14 small fillets in each bag. Place in freezer leaning up against something with the zipper side up.

Party King Tank Talon Review

Party King Tank Talon
Average Reviews:

Trust me. This is exactly what you want it to be, and probably better then your imagining. It was for me!
What I like:
1) High quality, heavy duty, sturdy plastic. Not cheap, flimsy, brittle plastic you find on other products.
2) Fits my 20lb propane tanks perfectly
3) Very stable. I've driven with this on a tank in my rear car seat, in the back of my SUV, and the back of a pickup. It never tipped on or off road, not even around corners.
4) It doesn't scratch hardwood floors like the tank by itself will.
5) Its stable on muddy ground and gravel.
What I DON'T like:
1) It costs more then I would like. If these were $5-$8, I would buy 5 more. But, I'm on a budget, so I have to rotate the one I have between 6 tanks for now.
2) It was a bit challenging to fit the 2 pieces together (you'll see what I mean). But its only an initial assembly issue, and it does make for a very sturdy, tight fit (which is good).
Overall, this is way better then any other tank solution I've used, and I've tried them all. Unlike other products I've tried, this will probably last a lifetime. Highly recommended. This is coming from a guy that appreciates the highest quality most rugged tools.

The TankTalonhelps prevent tipping, tumbling, rolling and dramatically helps stabilize propane tanks. The typical steel ring located on the bottom of propane tanks offers little stability to keep it from tipping over. Significantly increases the points of contact, at the base of the tank, providing a substantial increase of resistance to tipping over. Using the included bungee cord, the TankTalon securely holds full or empty propane tanks in place. The TankTalon product is recommended to be used with 10, 20 and 30 pound and larger tanks. The provided bungee cord will work with 20 poundstanks only. Easily snaps flat for convenient storage.Designed to easily disassemble for convenient storage. Simply unsnap the two halves from the tank usage mode, rotate the halves such that the TankTalon logos are facing outward, and snap back together in the storage mode.In the storage mode, the TankTalon can easily be stored behind or under the seat in your vehicle, hung from a peg board in your garage, or conveniently stowed away in your RV or camper.Great for tailgating, camping and cookouts. It works exceptionally well on grass, gravel and many other materials. No more twisting, rotating and trying to jam the ring on the bottom of your tank in the ground. Bayou Classic 3016 30-Quart Outdoor Turkey Fryer with Basket and Fry Pot Review

Bayou Classic 3016 30-Quart Outdoor Turkey Fryer with Basket and Fry Pot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have long been skeptical of "deep frying" at home. The smell, the mess, the smell...Anyway, I recently decided to throw a fish fry and decided it was time to invest in a fryer. The biggest issue for me in purchasing a fryer was the sturdiness of the burner stand. Besides having the ability to heat 12 quarts of oil, I also wanted a burner stand that would hold the weight of 20 quarts of beer for my homebrewing. I decided on the Bayou Classic.
This Bayou Classic kit came with everything and setup was simple. The burner stand exceeded my expectations for sturdiness and the height was such that when using the 10 quart stock pot, you could place the burner stand on a safe sturdy work surface to elevate it off the ground. I plan on also using this burner with my wok. The burner was able to bring the oil to temperature in approximately 15 minutes. The Fish and Chips turned out great.
Of course when using 350 degree boiling oil, you do not want your weekend fry festival to end with either a trip to your local burn unit or a reason to see if Allstate really has you in good hands. Common sense must prevail and last time I checked, Amazon does not sell that yet. Set your fry area up away from kids, pets and anything that you want to see another day. If you follow that simple advice, all should turn out okay.
Clean up can be best described as "sticky", but in order to get the life out of your aluminum parts, don't skimp. Now that I have tackled fish and chips, I will have to move on to the other "must have" fried foods these days: turkeys, chickens, and Twinkies. I can't wait.
